منذ السادسة وخمسين دقيقة صباحًا، هاجم مسلحو «ولاية سيناء» نحو 15 موقعًا للجيش والشرطة في الشيخ زويد ومحيطها، مستخدمين سيارات مفخخة ضد الكمائن العسكرية إلى جانب الأسلحة الثقيلة والعبوات الناسفة. وحاصروا قسم شرطة الشيخ زويد لساعات دون أن يتمكنوا من اقتحامه، حتى فكت طائرات الأباتشي وإف–16 الحصار. وكان من أكبر هجمات التنظيم خلال سنوات التمرد، وأعلن الجيش مقتل أكثر من مئة مسلح.

Starting at about 6:50 a.m., Sinai Province fighters attacked around 15 army and police positions in and around Sheikh Zuweid, using car bombs against military checkpoints along with heavy weapons and roadside bombs. Militants besieged the Sheikh Zuweid police station for hours but failed to take it before Apache helicopters and F-16s broke the siege. It was one of the group's largest assaults of the insurgency; the army said more than 100 militants were killed.
